The city - sliced, diced and served with a dash of sauce

Poonam's got a point
The little boy's hat seems to have caught Poonam Pandey's fancy when she showed up to support an inter-school dance competition for hearing-impaired children at a hall in Vile Parle over the weekend.

Sanjna's theatre treat for parents
There is little doubt that art is therapeutic. But while the city is warming up to painting parties and doodling workshops, the realm of performing arts hasn’t been explored much for adults. Theatre stalwart, Sanjna Kapoor, will conduct the first-ever theatre-based workshop for parents that will be held in Delhi later this month. The process-based workshop aims to help participants cope with the demands of being a parent today. Through exercises and games in creativity, parents will re-learn and discover the art of de-stressing, and most importantly, being present in the moment. Sounds like a much-needed intervention in a city where time is more precious than money.

A tale of two Metros, and two cities
This diarist, a self-confessed heritage buff, had recently returned to Kolkata after ages to find that most of its historic landscape was intact.

Metro cinema

One eyesore, however, was the sight of Metro cinema hall that lay in total ruin (left, see pic) as our yellow Amby crawled down the famous Esplanade stretch. On checking with our friends in the city, we were told that plans were afloat to convert the iconic space into a mall and multiplex.

Metro cinema

Unlike its Art Deco counterpart and namesake in the city that has undergone another makeover a few months back, we are keeping our fingers crossed that this film hub doesn't vanish into oblivion, like many of its ilk across India's metros.

Vir Das

Why Vir wears many hats
It was the photos of his study room by funnyman Vir Das that caught this diarist's eye. Starting next week, Das will be putting up some of his 'cool' stuff from his trademark hats to books and guitars for charity.

He goes on to write in the post that he intends to start a system for interested folk to bid any small amount, and that all proceeds would go to two different charities, about which he plans to share information on pretty soon. Watch this space.

Role model, really?
One of our in-house runners pointed out an amusing signage that had been creating quite a buzz on running forums on social media. Turns out, the suburb of Powai had an annual run yesterday that was announced on a massive banner (see pic) that featured a leggy model.

Powai run

A quick scroll down to the comments from several running groups ranged from witty to some even going to the extent of posting identically posed images (like the model) to make a statement. Either way, if the number of participants at yesterday's run showed a steep rise, the organisers have that unsuspecting model to thank.

Mumbai's kids sing for a special cause
Us human beings are sometimes so self-obsessed that we forget that the planet doesn't belong only to us. Even as we are busy building skyscrapers and shopping malls, we often ignore the fact that our actions impact animals and their habitat. But a concert at the NCPA on January 17 will remind us how important caring for animals is and what's more, it will have children sending out the message.

The gig involves three jazz acts - The A Team, The Cheese Quartet (in pic) and an ensemble of students from the NCPA's music training programme. All these kids are still in school, clearly getting the right education, and there is a lot that many grown-ups can learn from them.
