The city - sliced, diced and served with a dash of sauce

Mumbai Diary: Thursday Dossier

A white statement
The space within which an outfit is showcased is perhaps as important as its design. Which is why, showrooms of most designers have a personality of their own. Masaba Gupta, who recently got her Juhu store renovated, agrees. "Over the last year, I have realised the importance of paying attention to detail in the space you create to showcase the work you do — impactful, yet not overpowering and serving purely as a canvas. Our stores are now all white, with hints of honeyed gold, allowing the vast palette to come through," she said. White does provide the best contrast for colourful creations to pop, and who better than a designer to gauge that?

Who's the real Mr Bond?
We aren't the biggest fans of literature being made into films, but when the cast includes Tom Alter and Shernaz Patel bringing a Ruskin Bond work to life, it's different. The veteran actors are part of Bhargav Saikia's The Black Cat, a short film based on a story by the celebrated writer.

While the film's first look was shared in May, the buzz around it has grown recently with the unveiling of the poster and stills where Alter, who plays Bond, looks every bit like the Landour resident. Patel, on the other hand, plays the mysterious Mrs Bellows. The principal photography of the film has been completed in the hills of Uttarakhand. It will be screened at the Brahmaputra Valley Film Festival in Guwahati in September, with an online release later this year.

UK honour for CSMVS director
Recently, this diarist received a mail with the news that the University of Edinburgh had conferred the degree of Doctor 'Honoris Causa' on Sabyasachi Mukherjee, director, Chhatrapati Shivaji Vastu Sangrahalaya. The official letter was addressed by principal and vice chancellor, Professor Sir Timothy O'Shea and the Senatus Academicus of the university.

The letter revealed that the honour was for his role in transforming the museum to a vibrant, engaged, cultural catalyst in the city. A prestigious honour, this; made sweeter when we learnt from CSMVS' official Twitter handle about the ideal timing of the news - it was the director's birthday yesterday.

Books for the Kashmiri cause
If you're keen to do more than just rue about how kids cope in conflict-ridden Kashmir, gather some books and head to Khar Social, from today to August 5. The space is hosting a book collection drive by Hiral Malde Shah and Khushboo Balwani Rawal, co-founders of The Micro-Fiction Fan Fest. "In September, Sristi, an Ahmedabad-based organisation will visit Kashmir and set up a mobile library, while also donating books," shared Rawal, who came across the initiative through a social media post by Shail Desai, chairing the drive in Mumbai, and decided to join him in spreading awareness.

Peruvian escapade
Mumbai's new-found love for Latin American food is showing in the city's new line of restaurants offering exotic cuisines from the continent. Marrying this love with our undying appetite for web content is the new series, Vicky the Gastronaut, where celebrity chef Vicky Ratnani shares his escapades from his month-long trip in Peru.

The 17-episode series, which launches today, promises a blend of Peruvian food and culture, with Ratnani capturing the local Mistura food festival among other facets. This page had recently reported on chef Kunal Kapur's web series that showcases his food-related travels in Australia. This foray into the online space is more than a hint at how television now has some serious competition.
