Mumbai Diary: Thursday Dossier

Classic call for SoBo
South Mumbai just got its newest restaurant. Called Baroke (a take on Baroque), the restaurant is located in Grant Road and showcases the Baroque style that was popular in the 17th century (think opulent, glitzy interiors, chandeliers et al). The menu appears to have a mixed bag of dishes from around the world, which, like most other eateries these days, places emphasis on local ingredients. We’re excited by the performance area though, which aims to cater to the arts, be it music, dance or theatre. In venue-starved Mumbai, it is a delight to see more eateries opening their doors to engaging performances.

Singer Shaan obliges children of the Salaam Bombay Foundation with a selfie yesterday. He is lending his voice to the NGO’s latest stage adaptation.

This should be a Sippy super read
Among the litany of biographies and autobiographies that get published on personalities from the film industry every year, the one that been a long time coming is from the man who gave Bollywood one of its greatest blockbusters. Titled First Cut: A Film-Maker’s Fifty-Year Odyssey, Ramesh Sippy’s autobiography is set to launch in 2018, but things are already moving fast in the publishing industry — a leading publisher acquired the world rights for the book yesterday.

“It is not really an autobiography. It is more in the form of a memoir of my life and times through some of the most happening decades of Hindi cinema,” said the man who made Sholay along with other hits like Andaz, Seeta Aur Geeta, Shaan and the hugely popular mega serial Buniyaad for television. With a promise for imparting lessons in the art and craft of filmmaking along with interesting insider stories, we are sure this account would be, as they say it, unputdownable.

Nordic lessons for Deora and Thakur
A couple of weeks ago, this diarist had written about Congress leader Milind Deora joining the advisory board of the Arctic Assembly, a network that engages in dialogue on the future of the Arctic. The former MP is now in Norway, with his friend and BCCI chief Anurag Thakur, on an official visit, where among other issues, discussions with the country’s MPs are underway for Arctic cooperation.

Deora, it seems, can’t seem to get enough of the Nordic nation — he visited the Storting, Norway’s parliament, and was amused to see that the seating was organised on the basis of region, not party. Next up was Deora’s praise for the Nordic economic model, a combination of free market capitalism with universal health care and comprehensive social security, of which he says he’s always been a proponent. The two friends also posed for the camera, and need we say, they both looked dapper.

Crowd funding of the stray kinds
When it comes to an injured stray, few have the heart to turn a blind eye, let alone an animal welfare group. Save Our Strays (SOS), a city-based NGO that rescues and nurses wounded animals back to health, along with enabling their sterilisation, vaccination and adoption, has been trying to do so for every hapless creature it comes across.

But the cost involved has forced the organisation to partially suspend its operations until funds flow in. This will unfortunately force SOS to prioritise its rescue work. A crowd-funding request has been floated on Ketto. We hope the money for the good cause flows in soon.

A Zaeden spin-off at EDC
Electric Daisy Carnival, to be held on November 12-13 at Buddh International Circuit in Noida, announced the complete two-day artiste lineup yesterday. The inaugural event will be a blend of Electronic Dance Music (EDM) and Trance.

On day one, local boy Zaeden (in pic) will spin along with Sartek and Lost Stories (Mumbai) with a host of international names like Alesso (Sweden), R3hab and Yellow Claw (Netherlands) and Tommy Trash (Australia). The next day will be more about home-grown EDM talent, with Audio Units (Bengaluru), BLOT! (New Delhi) and SEQUE3L (Pune) in the mix.
