Mumbai: Fisherman dies as trawler hits fishing boat

A 38-year-old fisherman drowned in the Arabian sea off Madh Island near suburban Malad after his boat was hit by a trawler this afternoon, police said.

The victim, identified as Laxman Koli, was sailing in his boat 'Daryasagar' along with three other fishermen when the trawler rammed into it around 1.30 pm approximately 18 kms off the coast, police added.

"When the trawler hit the boat, all the four fishermen jumped into the sea. While three of them survived, Koli drowned," police said. The three others were rescued by other fishermen nearby. Koli's body was later recovered. The trawler disappeared from the spot after the accident and is yet to be identified, police said.

Meanwhile, a case under IPC sections 304A (causing death by negligence), 280 (rash navigation of vessel), and section 62 of the Inland Vessels Act against the sailor of trawler has been registered at Malwani police station in this regard. Further investigation into the case is on, police said.
