A week after a truck carrying scrap was apprehended near the Lion Gate in Colaba and five people were arrested for stealing copper, iron and steal from the Indian Navy’s scrap yard, it has been found that the accused have no terror links and were just scrap thieves.

Insiders involved
A Colaba police officer said, “The truck was detained while it was about to leave the premises. Initially, two people were arrested and scrap material worth Rs 2 lakh was seized. Later, it was found that the truck driver had managed to enter the premises as it had a gate pass issued on the vehicle’s number. Investigation revealed that the driver and his accomplice were helped by three private contractual workers of the navy scrap yard.” The joint probe by the ATC and the police led to the arrest of the three workers. The arrested are Xavier Joshep (25), Madhav Kurne (54), Esub Chowdhary (21), Saifan Kurmujgir (42) and Ravendra Chorwekar (40).

Nothing suspicious
Speaking to mid-day, advocate Sunil Pandey said, “All of them were questioned on terror links for security reasons, but nothing suspicious was found. They have been sent to judicial custody till December 14.”
