How do aphrodisiacs work?
"They work in two different ways, the physical way and the emotional or psychological way. The physical pathway is when they increase certain hormones that help elicit desire. Zinc and argenine increase blood flow to the pelvic region, and work as viagra. Brazil nuts are high on zinc. Pumpkin seeds, peanuts, chicken, oysters, turkey, help increase argenine, which will increase nitric oxide, and that's how viagra works. Chocolate works more on a psychological level as they are high on tryptophan and theobromine which are associated with the feel good factor. If you are feeling good, you tend to feel attracted to someone. Limit alcohol to two drinks as it can work as a depressant too," explains Dr Vishakha Shivdasani, physician, nutrition and lifestyle ailments expert.
General well being improves your sex life. Food items that are high in potassium (potatoes, bananas and oats), also give a serotonin high says dietician and fitness expert, Sheela Tanna. "Food rich in antioxidants boosts your immunity and health in general. Nuts and fish are packed with Omega 3 acids and lower your cholesterol, give you an energy boast and up your serotonin or the feel-good hormone. Items that calm you down also help, such as yoghurt, buttermilk, kesar and turmeric milk. Limit your sugar intake," she adds.
