Mumbai: How courier firm employees prevented robbery of jewellery worth Rs 40L

Quick thinking by four employees led to the Airport police arresting six people from a gang of eight, who tried to loot a consignment of jewellery worth over Rs 40 lakh from a courier company’s car by posing as Sales Tax and Vigilance Department officials.

The same courier company — Sai Air Courier Services, which specialises in gold consignments — had been looted of jewellery worth Rs 5 crore in 2013 and five people had been arrested, including two policemen.

Thinking on their feet
According to police officials, the incident took place around 11 pm on August 28, when the four employees of Sai Air courier were returning after collecting a jewellery consignment worth Rs 40 lakh from the cargo area of the airport in a Maruti Suzuki Swift.

Near a five-star hotel close to the airport, their car was intercepted by some of the accused, who claimed they were Sales Tax officials and said some Vigilance Department officials would arrive there soon.

While they were talking to the employees and asking about the consignment, two other cars arrived with the ‘Vigilance’ officials, taking the total number of accused to eight, including two women.

“The accused told the employees that their documentation was not proper and asked to see the consignment. The employees, who had lowered their windows to talk to the accused, smelled something fishy since a similar thing had happened to the company in the past and quickly rolled up the windows,” said a police officer.

They locked the car and remained seated there, while one of them clandestinely called the police. The accused, meanwhile, banged on the windows of the car and flashed fake ID badges.

Nabbed
Within 30 minutes, a police team reached the spot and six of the accused were nabbed. The two women are absconding. The six arrested accused have been identified as Fakrul Jafrul Ismail Sheikh (35), Dayanand Shyamrao Shewale (36), Nasirali Shabirali Qureshi (29), Zulfikar Gulam Hussain (40), Jagdish Indradeo Yadav (39) and Salim Badruddin Faki (32). After investigations, the Airport police registered an FIR on September 2. DCP Dhananjay Kulkarni said, “All six accused were arrested from the spot and we are checking their background. Two women are still on run.”
