Mumbai: Husband of teen, who was sold as a maid, arrested

Malad police have arrested husband of 14-year-old girl, who was allegedly sold to a well-heeled Mumbai family for Rs 50,000, and bravely escaped her tormentors by climbing down from 17-floor skyscraper balcony

The Malad police have arrested the husband of the 14-year-old girl, who was allegedly sold to a well-heeled Mumbai family for Rs 50,000, and bravely escaped her tormentors by climbing down from the 17 floor balcony of a skyscraper. mid-day had reported this, ‘Teen climbs out of Malad building’s toilet window to escape abusive employers’ (July 29).

Police said they arrested accused Krishnakumar Chamar (21) from Okhla in Delhi, and brought him to Mumbai on Monday evening. He was produced before a court on Tuesday and remanded in police custody.


During interrogation he said he was unaware that his wife was sold for Rs 50,000 by Manju Sahani in Mumbai. He claimed he knows Sahani very well as both stay in the same locality. He claimed Sahani told him she was going to Patna, and had found a job for his wife for Rs 5,000 per month. She wanted to take her along. Sahani said she could stay for a few days in Patna and if she liked the job she could continue, otherwise she would bring her back when she returned.

When asked how he married the girl, he said initially because of the age, he refused to marry her. But after repeated requests from her aunt he agreed.

According to police sources, Krishnakumar belongs to Maharajganj District, Gorakhpur, at Uttar Pradesh, and has been living in Delhi for many years. He sold and purchased scrap. He knows the girl’s aunt, Lalmani alias Phuwa for many years from Gurgaon, where she also used to collect scrap from garbage and sell it to scrap dealers. The Malad police also went to her house but did not find her at home.

Booked under POCSO
Chamar was booked for violation of the Child Marriage Act, rape, and Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO) and produced before the Sessions Court at Dindoshi. He was remanded in police custody till August 8. Police have got second remand for Manju Sahani till August 8.
