Six months after the murder of Karishma Mane (23), a Nehru Nagar resident in broad daylight, police are still unsure about her murderer.

Nehru Nagar police had arrested one accused in the case, and charge-sheeted him based on the conclusions of a brain mapping and polygraph test. But now police are questioning three more suspects in connection with the murder. They are seeking permission for polygraph tests on them.

Karishma, a salesgirl in a cloth shop at Dadar, was stabbed to death by an unknown person on her way to Kurla station on the morning of May 24. After a month of intensive investigations, Nehru Nagar police arrested Salim Sheikh (23).

Sheikh didn’t confess to the crime, but he was charged on the basis of brain mapping and polygraph test. Salim lives in the same vicinity where Karishma stayed. He was spotted around the crime scene on May 24 and captured in CCTV placed 100m away. Police filed a charge sheet against him in last week of September but didn’t find a motive for the crime.

Now, after 5 months of the first accused’s arrest, police are questioning three more suspects in the case. These three suspects also live where Karishma lived, said an officer. “We have sought permission for their polygraph test which can give us some leads,” he added.

Police speak
“We have chargesheeted Salim last month. We had also given a notice to the court under 173(8), in which we mentioned the ongoing investigation. We are questioning three more suspects, if we get any leads from them, it will help in finding the motive behind the crime,” said Shahaji Umap, Deputy Commissioner of police (Zone 6).
