Mumbai: Minor commits suicide over father's reprimand

Upset about being reprimanded by his father, a 12-year-old student from Charkop, Kandivli West, committed suicide by consuming rat poison on Thursday.

Police sources said that the boy, Deepak Jaiswal, was preparing for his exams, to be held on Monday. On Thursday morning, he had been out with his friends and returned late in the evening. His father scolded him, asking him to focus on his studies. This upset Deepak, who consumed rat poison he found in the house, the police said.

After Deepak complained of feeling dizzy, he was admitted to a nearby nursing home. When his condition deteriorated, he was shifted to Ambedkar Municipal Hospital, where he died. An officer from Charkop police station said they did not suspect foul play.

Phoolchand Jaiswal, Deepak’s father, said, “The parents of the other children had complained that my son was wasting everyone’s time,” he said, admitting he had also slapped him a couple of times. “I did not realise he would decide to take such a drastic step,” said Jaiswal.
