Fallen yellow barricades dotting the Western Express Highway (WEH) will soon be a sight of the past. A day after mid-day published a report (MMRDA’s plastic is not fantastic) on the poor condition of the traffic barricades placed between Dahisar and Andheri East to manage traffic during construction of Metro 7, the planning body has decided to replace them with three-ft long poles that are connected with a rope.

Poles and ropes
Additional Metropolitan Commissioner Pravin Darade said, “It was observed that at many places the movable plastic dividers used to divert the reversible traffic during the evening peak hours were getting damaged because of the vehicles. So now, small temporary poles tied with a rope are being used so that motorists follow the lane discipline.” MMRDA is spending Rs 25 crore on managing traffic during construction of Metro 7 and these plastic barricades, and now the poles, are part of the management system, which includes additional traffic police staff as well.

Traffic staff relieved
The installation of these temporary poles has come as a relief for the traffic wardens and traffic police, who say that they are better than the plastic barricades that used to get damaged easily. The work of installing the poles has already begun between Kandivli and Malad and in the next two to three weeks, it would be done at other locations on the highway between Dahisar and Andheri. The poles, kept at a distance of 15-20 feet, will be tied with a nylon rope. This set up will ensure that motorists do not indulge in cutting lanes, the way they used to with the plastic barricades.
