20-year-old stripped, beaten for trying to rob mandal in Kalyan

The Mahatma Phule police in Kalyan arrested a 20-year-old youth after he was caught trying to rob a collection box at a Ganesh mandal


The Mahatma Phule police in Kalyan arrested a 20-year-old youth after he was caught trying to rob a collection box at a Ganesh mandal on Friday.


The devotees from the mandal caught the youth red-handed. The mob then stripped him and tied him to a pole. The group allegedly assaulted him and only stopped when cops arrived at the scene. The arrested accused has been identified as Deepak Narayan Jadhav 20, a resident of Lal Chowkie area in Kalyan. The incident took place on Friday morning at Raja Ganesh Mandal based at Chikangar in Kalyan west. The mandal idol is famous as Chikangar cha Raja and numerous devotees throng to the mandal to seek blessings.

“We have arrested Jadhav, who was caught and handed over to us by the Mandal members. He was trying to rob the collection box, when he was caught red-handed,” said Anil Pawar, Senior Police Inspector, Mahatma Phule police station.

Viral video
A video showing the mob assaulting Jadhav at the mandal went viral. However, the police have not taken any action against the people who assaulted Jadhav.

Inspector Pawar said, “We had called the parents of the accused Jadhav, and asked them if they had any complaint against the mandal members. Jadhav’s father, who is a watchman, said that his son was caught earlier too in similar cases. He had no complaints against the mandal.”A case has been registered at Mahatma Phule police station under section 379 of the IPC. Sachin Bhoir, the president of the mandal, was not available for comments.
