A septuagenarian died after being knocked down by a taxi on Peddar Road on Tuesday. The Gamdevi police have arrested Mohammed Siddiq Talim, 65, the driver of the taxi, who turned himself in at the police station.

Devi Morasi, 75, was a resident of Shanti Bhuvan on Peddar Road, and was out for a short walk. While crossing the road opposite Cumballa Hill Telephone Exchange around 11.30 am, a taxi going in the southern direction knocked her down. Some eyewitnesses told cops that Morasi fumbled with the divider while crossing the road and fell after the taxi knocked her down. Talim took her to the Jaslok hospital, parked his car and disappeared.

After admitting Morasi, Talim reappeared and narrated the incident. "The driver took the injured woman [to the hospital] himself and fled, fearing the wrath of residents and family. He came to the police station a couple of hours after the incident," said one officer from Gamdevi police station. "Talim also claimed that the woman fumbled while crossing the road and fell right in front of his taxi. He tried to control the taxi, but it hit the woman, causing a head injury," the officer added. Morasi succumbed to her injuries at 5 pm.

Talim has been booked under sections 279, 304 (A) of the IPC and arrested.

Another police officer said, "A medical test was carried out, which indicated that he was not drunk. He will be produced in court on Wednesday," said the officer.
