Thursday was nothing compared to the nightmare that Mumbai faced the previous day as heavy rainfall hit the city and brought it to its knees. All thanks to the slowing down of the movement of the low-pressure area that has formed over Bay of Bengal, which in turn has weakened the monsoon current. According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), the intensity is likely to go down further in the next two to three days, due to which no rain warning has been issued for today.

In the past 24 hours, the Colaba observatory of IMD recorded 73.6 mm rain whereas Santacruz recorded 242.2 mm of rainfall. Wednesday’s reading of 12 hours was 71.2 mm rainfall for Colaba and 217.4 mm for Santacruz.

Speaking to mid-day, Bishwombhar Singh, scientist at IMD, said, “The low-pressure region over Bay of Bengal, which is moving westwards, has become very slow. Due to this the monsoon current has weakened. Hence there are no chances of heavy rainfall in near future.” The situation on Thursday was not as bad as Wednesday but some parts of the city did receive heavy rainfall after noon.
Explaining the reason behind the change in the situation, Singh further said, “All of it depends on the flow of the wind over the sea. If the wind speed has lowered it is bound to slow down the movement of the low-pressure area. However, the red code warning was continued for Palghar and Raigad districts on Thursday as well. It was removed for Mumbai and Thane.”
