The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s (BMC’s) negligence has once again come to the fore with an incident in Nehru Nagar, which claimed the life of a six-year-old boy. The child died after falling into a pit that was dug up by the civic body for constructing a public toilet. Locals allege that the pit has been left open for the past two months and BMC never bothered about it after giving the contract to a local contractor.

Body found floating
According to police, around 11.30 am on Thursday, the victim Mohammad Shaikh was playing near the pit when he slipped into it. When passersby spotted his body floating in the water, they alerted his parents, who then informed the cops.

Speaking to mid-day, corporator of L ward, Sanjana Mungelkar said, “The incident is shocking. We have asked the police to prosecute the person responsible for it. Though the spot where the toilet is being constructed has fencing, no security guard has been deployed. Work is going on for the past two months.” Deputy commissioner of police (zone VI), Shahaji Umap said, “We are talking to the family of the deceased. An FIR under section 304 (A) of IPC has been registered.”
