The Mumbai police’s Social Service Branch has rescued within seven hours, an Arunachal Pradesh-based minor, who was tricked and brought to Mumbai by her Facebook friend.

Mumbai police were informed by Delhi police around 11 am yesterday that a 17-year-old girl from Wakro village in Lohit district, Arunachal Pradesh, was befriended on Facebook by a man and eventually invited to Guwahati 10 days ago. On December 7, she managed to call her parents from his phone and asked for money to return, informing them that the man who had befriended her was older and had confiscated her mobile, and kept her captive in Rehmannagar near Mumbai. She said there was a hospital and a highway near the place where he had kept her. The man’s name on Facebook was Onee Manpoong.

The girls’ parents had registered a missing person’s complaint on November 28. She had gone missing from the girls’ hostel of her government higher secondary school. The Delhi police was helping Arunachal Pradesh police.

Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) Sanjay Saxena formed a team of three people including Inspector Pravin Kadam, Head Constable PN Ghag and Sub-Inspector Lavkush Shitole.

Around 12.30 pm, the police got the location of the mobile as Taloja. The police only had this and that there was a hospital and a highway near the place where the girl had been kept, as clues. By 2.30 pm the team reached Taloja. Around 6.30 pm after showing many shopkeepers her picture, they found the girl at Shriniwas Kherne village, post Devicha Pada, Taloja. They arrested the man who had allegedly tricked her, identified as Onee Kamal Das alias Kiran.

Deputy Commissioner of Police, SSB Pravin Patil, told mid-day, “I formed a team which rescued the girl and we arrested the accused in 7 hours. We have sent him to Taloja police station.”
