A high alert has been issued in Mumbai following the violence in Delhi over the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA), which has claimed 13 lives including a police constable and injured over 180.

According to sources, the alert was issued on Monday night by city Police Commissioner Sanjay Barve where he has asked officials to be more vigilant, to increase patrolling and keep a close tab on anti-social elements.

"We are monitoring the situation closely and the entire force has been put on alert to keep a tab in their respective zones; especially the locations which had already witnessed anti or pro CAA protest. We have been reaching out to community leaders to discuss with them and avoid any untoward incidents," a senior officer told mid-day.

"The intelligence department is also keeping a close eye on all social media platforms. If anyone is found violating the law or sharing fake information, strict action will be taken," he added.

Post the violence in Delhi, messages were circulated asking people to gather near Gateway of India for a candle-light march which was denied by the cops. Some people tried protesting near Marine Drive, but they were detained by the local police.

In a statement, the Mumbai Police spokesperson Pranay Ashok said, "No kind of gathering would be allowed at any location in the city except the designated place which is Azad Maidan. All those who indulge in any unlawful gathering shall be arrested and offences will be registered."
