In order to boost connectivity between the business hub of Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC) and the Eastern suburbs, construction on a 1.6-km BKC-Chunabhatti connector is set to commence after the monsoon ends.

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has already received bids from five companies Gammon India, Simplex Infrastructures, J Kumar, Larsen & Toubro and JMC Projects for the job.

A senior MMRDA official said, “We received bids from five companies in mid-July. These will be evaluated in a month’s time and then forwarded to the executive committee for final approvals.

The construction work is expected to begin after the monsoon.” The MMRDA has also altered the connector’s design, bringing down the estimated cost from Rs 261 crore to about Rs 200 crore.

Another official added, “Earlier, we had planned to construct a cable-stayed bridge over Mithi River, due to which the project cost was working out to be R261 crore. But, after an environment report gave us clearance for constructing a pillar, the cost has reduced by a whopping Rs 61 crore.”

Expected to be completed in three years after construction begins, the flyover will help motorists from the Eastern suburbs reach the BKC quickly. Currently, it takes over 30 minutes to reach BKC from Chunabhatti by road, and it can take even longer if there is heavy traffic near Sion Circle or on the Sion-Dharavi link road. With the flyover, however, motorists will be able to get to BKC from Chunabhatti in less than 10 minutes.

The route
As per the blueprint, the connector is supposed to be constructed between G Block (behind Diamond Bourse) of Bandra-Kurla Complex and an area close to the Somaiya Ground in Chunabhatti, bypassing the Maharashtra Nature Park, LBS Road and railway tracks. The railways have already given in-principle approval for the project, but the final approval is pending.
