After undergoing a political tug of war between Shiv Sena and Congress, Mumbai’s first garden under a flyover was opened for public in Matunga on Monday.

The garden under Tulpule flyover on Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Road called Nanalal D Mehta garden, was inaugurated by Mayor Snehal Ambekar in the presence of other politicians and residents of the area.

“There was no jogging space available during monsoon but now there is,” said Tarachand Salva, a resident.
It was ‘One Matunga’ group, comprising residents of the area, who came up with this idea and approached the BMC. Their aim was to beautify the space and get rid of the gamblers who had set up shop there.
Along with happiness, the residents are also a little miffed about the infrastructural issues with the garden. “During monsoon, leakage from the flyover and the less number of gates in the garden are issues that need to be addressed,” said Nikhil Desai, a resident.
