After news of a future hike in the prices of sugar and salt spread across the city, people rushed to stores for stocking up on the items. A few shops took advantage of this and sold the commodities at rates higher than the usual.

Costly rumours
The rumours spread via social media yesterday — that salt would soon cost R100 a kg and sugar R400. The police had to deploy personnel in several areas to control the crowd.

Ashok Dudhe, DCP and PRO, Mumbai Police, tweeted, “Please do not believe in rumours. There is no shortage of #salt or any other commodity nor any hike information.”

Legal Metrology Department’s Amitabh Gupta said, “No packed commodities can be sold above MRP. If anyone does this, the department will take action.”

And yet, there was no stopping the rumour, which reached Thane, Kalyan, Ulhasnagar and Navi Mumbai too.

Citizen speak
Wadala resident Azim Shaikh said he got the news at 7 pm. “I rushed to the nearby shop and found it crowded. I took 4 kg salt at the same price. I’m aware that these might be just rumours, but if overnight currency can get banned, why not salt and sugar?”

“Many were buying salt for Rs 100 and sugar for Rs 300. I bought 10 kg sugar at Rs 50. When people started fighting, policemen were deployed near gate no. 1 on Marve road,” said Malwani resident Bablu Shaikh.
