In a boost to women’s cricket, Rizvi College of Arts, Science & Commerce, under the aegis of the Mumbai Cricket Association, will organise the Association of Indian Universities’ West Zone and All India women’s Inter-University tourney from December 8 to 21.

The tournament will see 34 teams compete for the final eight spots. Top two teams from each zone will qualify for the All India stage. The West Zone competition will be held from December 9 to 17, while the All India phase will start from December 19.

Matches will be played at Police Gymkhana, Matunga Gymkhana, Bombay Gymkhana, Parsee Gymkhana, Islam Gymkhana, PJ Hindu Gymkhana, Khar Gymkhana and MIG Cricket Club.

Ex India captain Dilip Vengsarkar said varsity cricket is a significant stepping stone for young women looking to go on and play the game professionally. "I am glad that the inter-varsity women’s tournament is to be held in Mumbai for the first time."

"It is a good opportunity for girls to showcase their talent," said Vengsarkar at a function to announce the Mumbai University-Rizvi College joint initiative at the Wankhede Stadium on Friday.
