Blaze started in meter box; alert watchman put off mains immediately; no loss of life reported
Two luxury sedans were badly damaged in the blaze
A fire broke out in a multi-storey building in the Gaondevi area of Thane early this morning. Two luxury sedans parked on the premises were badly damaged in the fire that is believed to have started because of a short circuit in the meter-box. There was no loss of life reported, while a few residents complained of suffocation and were given treatment. A total of 29 residents were evacuated immediately and the situation was brought under control by the fire brigade and disaster management team.

A major tragedy was averted as the alert watchman of the building, Rajhans society, immediately switched off the mains after noticing the fire around 2.15am. After the building residents called the fire brigade, two water tankers were immediately sent to the spot. One Mercedes 350 CDS car and another Honda City car were charred.
Santosh Kadam, disaster management officer at Thane Municipal Corporation, said, "The building is near Thane station so it is a relatively busy area even during that hour. Also, the building has a night watchman who was taking rounds when he noticed the meter box on fire." One resident, Priyadarshini Dalvi, 32, has been admitted to Thane's Bhansali Hospital after she complained of suffocation and nausea.
