Mumbai: Ward rejig leaves many big leaders 'homeless'

Several BMCâu00c2u0080u00c2u0088group leaders have lost their seats to reservation and delimitation — Manoj Kotak (BJP), Trushna Vishwasrao (Sena), Sandeep Deshpande (MNS), Dhananjay Pisal (NCP) and Rais Shaikh (SP) as the reservation of 227 seats for the 2017 civic polls was finalised on Monday.

Standing Committee chairman and three-time corporator, Yashodhar Phanse (Sena), and Leader of Opposition Pravin Chheda saw their wards merged with two others; Devendra Amberkar (Congress) and Bhalchandra Shirsat (BJP) lost theirs to the OBC lady’s category.

A senior official said, “The changes have created uncertainty among all parties. Everyone was searching for their new ward after delimitation. Most political heavyweights fell to reservations, which is a big loss to parties as they will have to look for stronger candidates.”

However, not all were as unlucky. A few senior leaders like BJP group leader Manoj Kotak, Sena group leader Trushna Vishwasrao, Shraddha Jadhav and Dr Shubha Raul have
retained their seats.

Even mayor Snehal Ambekar has escaped and will be able to contest from the neighbouring ward if given a chance.
