The Indian Railways are expanding their fleet with the best coaches - Linke Hofmann Busch (LHB) - that are used in Rajdhani and Shatabdi trains. This comes at a time when the Western Railway (WR) is starting a new Bandra Terminus (BDTS)-Patna Humsafar Express from July 18 that will also have LHB coaches.

The Western Railway (WR) has started a centre to train their engineers at Bandra Terminus on maintenance of LHB coaches. Sources said that the first sessions of training have begun and they are also getting LHB type coaches in the yard there.
The yard next to the Bandra Terminus has a capacity of 888 coaches, out of which 115 coaches of LHB make will be handled. The rest are manufactured by the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) that will be put out of operation.
The 18-coach Humsafar Express will also be added to the fleet that shall be maintained at BDTS yard. On June 10, mid-day reported, 'Railways to strengthen Centre Buffer Couplers that join coaches in trains' about LHB coaches getting upgraded and more to be added.
"Currently not everyone knows the nitty-gritties of maintaining LHB coaches and so this centre has been created to train our staff," said a WR official.
At present the Rajdhani and Shatabdi trains which have these LHB coaches are maintained at Mumbai Central carshed. This has a holding capacity of 823 coaches of which there are 250 coaches of LHB make.
The LHB coaches are designed to absorb small jerks and shocks. They also support acceleration, and help reduce injuries during accidents. The Railway Board is also strengthening the couplers that join two coaches in all the 63,000-odd coaches of passenger trains.
