A probe has been initiated by the Crime Branch into the incident, they said.

At around 2.30 am on Monday, Mulund police station personnel found that the youth - Amit Ravi Rathod - had hanged himself with his shirt from a hook in the ceiling of the toilet, an inspector attached to the police station said. Rathod was in the Mulund police lock-up following his arrest last week. He kept the water tap on to apparently make the police think that he was using the toilet, the official said.

The body was later sent to J J hospital in South Mumbai for postmortem, he said. Rathod was arrested by the Mulund police on April 29 under sections 454 (lurking house-trespass or house-breaking in order to commit offence punishable with imprisonment), 457 and 380 (theft) of IPC and was remanded in police custody till May 3, they said.

There were three other inmates in the lock-up and another person in the police station who had come there to lodge a non-cognisable offence, when the incident occurred. Rathod also had previous criminal record, police said adding that the Crime Branch and Revenue department have been informed about the incident and an inquiry is in progress.

Mulund police registered an accidental death report. The relatives of the deceased were informed about the incident. Rathod's wife Vidya Amit Rathod (25) and his cousin Praveen Bharat Rathod (18) reached the J J hospital to claim the body, police said.
