In an attempt to keep away trespassers from surrounding slums, a new high-tech security system will be installed, which will have sensors weaved into a barbed wire fence
In line with its vision to transform the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport into one of the world’s smartest airports, the much-awaited new terminal (T2) has put in place high-tech security measures to keep out intruders at its perimeter. The security around the new terminal and the entire airport has been upgraded in such a manner that no one from the peripheral slum areas around the airport can enter the premises.
If intruders breach the airport perimeter fence line, they will receive a minor shock and a signal will be relayed to the control room for action

At various locations in and around the airport, high-tech night vision cameras have been installed that will capture the intruders and immediately relay the details within seconds to the control room that will be manned by a surveillance team around the clock. The joint co-ordination control (JCC) room of T2 is segregated in to three parts that form the ‘GVK’; G (ground staff) V (flight operations) K (support team that will include IT, Customs and CISF personnel).
The JCC, which is located on the third floor of the new terminal, currently has 300 staff and will be increased from February 12, when the airport is thrown open for operations. T2 is under the surveillance of 2,000 cameras (1,600 for security and 400 for the JCC) that are likely to increase with further development of the terminal.
Not only this, but also another security system Perimeter Intrusion and Detection System (PIDS) has also been installed at the periphery of the airport in order to detect intruders. This system, which is based on taut wire technology, will have sensors weaved into a barbed wire fence surrounding the airport perimeter. Once the fence is breached, the wires will not only deliver a mild shock to the intruder, but an alert will also flash on to surveillance monitors at the JCC, giving the location of the breach, for a security response.
