A commercial sex-worker who was murdered by her paramour on October 21 died at the Sassoon hospital on Friday was detected HIV positive, said officials from the Faraskhana police station.

According to Police Sub-Inspector U K Yadav, Priya alias Yallawa (25), a commercial sex worker at a Budhwar Peth brothel who hailed from Sirsi in Karnataka, was attacked by her lover Sachin Mahadev Gurav (27). Yallawa who sustained internal head injuries, died on Friday after battling for life for seven days at the hospital. Her condition was compounded by her HIV status. The police said Gurav, who hailed from Hangal in Karnataka, claimed to be her lover and murdered her because she refused to keep physical relations with him.

The Faraskhana Police officials have arrested her lover and he has been sent to judicial custody till today. Yadav said the victim was being treated by an NGO located in Bhudhwar Peth. "Though the injuries were not grievous the weak physical condition of victim proved fatal," he added.u00a0 Reportedly, Gurav, a rickshaw driver, was living with the victim since past eight months and claimed to be married to her. Cops believe that the victim was not happy with Gurav's alcoholism and refrained from keeping physical relations.

Late in the evening on October 21, Gurav took Yallawa to the terrace of Dhamdhere Chawl in Budhwar Peth and banged her head against a pillar and a wooden block after an argument. Later Gurav took her to Sassoon hospital, where she died on Friday due to internal head injuries.

In the meanwhile, Faraskhana police inspector, Anant Raje Shirke, who is in-charge of the case, told MiD DAY that since the past few years, it was the first such case in the city where a sex worker has been murdered over a broken love affair. Shirke said that the victim has two kids from her first husband who are living with their grandmother in Sirsi. Her first husband had AIDS and died a year ago.
