Navratilova (57) popped the question at the Arthur Ashe Stadium's Tennis Channel Suite during the break between the two men's singles semi-finals.
"I was very nervous, but it came off, and she said yes, and I was flying high," Navratilova told www.wta.com.
"It was like an out of body experience because you see people propose at sporting events before. You watch it in movies and in real life, and here it was happening to me.
It was pretty cool," added Navratilova, who won 18 Grand Slam singles titles and 167 tour crowns in total. Navratilova later said the couple preferred to marry in Florida, where they live.
Julia Lemigova is a 1991 Miss Universe runner-up, where she represented the Soviet Union as Miss USSR. She is the former mistress of murdered French banker Edouard Stern, who was found wearing a head-to-toe latex catsuit when he was shot dead in his Geneva home in 2005 allegedly after a sadomasochistic bondage session went wrong. She also reportedly gave birth to a son with Stern, but the baby mysteriously died five months later. Lemigova is the founder of French skin care company Russie Blanche.
