Former India stumper from Baroda, Nayan Mongia has applied for the BCCI selector's job on deadline day. The Indian cricket board had set September 14 as the deadline for applying for the posts.

Unlike in the past, BCCI this time has set in place a strict qualification criteria for appointment of selectors. Accordingly, it requires applicants to have international cricket experience. The Board has also an age cap of 60 years. Candidates applying for the positions of senior, junior and women national selectors have to fulfill these requirements.
To be considered for the senior national selection committee, the BCCI stated, "He or she should have represented the Indian team either in a Test match or a One-day international or have featured in more than 50 first class matches in India, in a team selected by the BCCI".
The BCCI also stated that candidates should have played "more than 50 first-class matches in India to be considered for a position" in the junior national selection committee and should have retired on record from all forms of cricket at least 5 years prior to the date of application.
Satisfying all criteria
"I have always been very keen to become a selector. I not only meet the criteria mentioned by the Board, I also have a strong desire to give something back to the game which has given me so much in life. Whatever I am today is because of my cricket," said Mongia.
The stumper was part of history when Anil Kumble picked all 10 wickets in an innings against Pakistan at the Ferozeshah Kotla in 1999. He played in two World Cups — the 1996 and 1999 editions in India and England respectively. He also featured in 158 first-class matches.
"I am sure if I get the job, and I don't mind whether I am senior or a junior selector, I will be able to pick the best team for India as I have developed a good sense of spotting talent, having seen cricket at different levels for a long time. I also have enough experience as I was Baroda's chairman of the junior and senior selection committee," added Mongia.
Dropped in 1999-2000
Mongia played 44 Tests and 140 ODIs for India. In 1999, he was at the receiving end of some indifferent selection when the Chandu Borde-led selection committee decided to drop him for the 1999-2000 tour of Australia.
Current national selector MSK Prasad was picked for the three-Test series instead while Mumbai's Sameer Dighe got picked in Sachin Tendulkar's team for the triangular series Down Under. Mongia played till 2001.
