Will the family scion revive Wadia Hospital?

After rumours of pending renovation and even possible shutdown, the ball has finally begun to roll for the Bai Jerbai Wadia Hospital for children and Nowrosjee Wadia Maternity Hospital in Parel.

Ness Wadia is keen for a new plan for the development of Wadia Hospital on a public-private partnership basis.

Chairman of Wadia Group and son of Maureen Wadia, who heads the board of the hospital's trustees, Ness Wadia visited Additional Municipal Commissioner Manisha Mhaiskar around 5.30 pm on Tuesday.

Nearly a year ago, the children's hospital was shut down and patients transferred to the maternity hospital building.

BMC sources said that during his hour-long visit, Ness discussed issues relating to the hospital.

"He is keen for a new plan for development on a public-private partnership basis. It is in the initial stages but we will soon finalise matters," the source said. "It is nice to see him take special interest in the project."

Sources from the hospital said that the management was currently in the process of hiring new administrative staff who would help with the revamp of the premises.

Doctors' take

The transferring of patients from the children's hospital to the maternity hospital building put huge load on the hospital's limited resources.

"We have only 250 beds in the maternity home at the moment and as of Thursday evening, we have 243 patients already and another 10 will surely arrive in the next few hours," said a senior doctor from the hospital.

"When the children's hospital was open, there was more space as that hospital had the same number of beds as the maternity home. Now even if we have personnel, we don't have the resources to treat patients."

The management has also had some run-ins with the staff as well as the local corporator about the running of the hospital.

Another doctor, who until recently was with the hospital, said, "If Ness is getting involved, it must mean they are seriously considering renovation. And it couldn't happen sooner.

Rumours of renovation have been going on forever and the quality of the hospital has certainly suffered."

The doctor said that when Neville Wadia was on the managing committee, doctors had a free reign. "Now, many things have changed.

It will be a pleasant change to see the hospital running to full capacity again and to regain some of its old glory."

Authority speak

Hospital medical director Y K Amdekar refused to comment on the matter.

"We are only concerned with medical operations of this hospital," said Dr Amdekar. "The hospital revamp is a matter for the management to deal with."

Maureen Wadia was unavailable for comment.

Hospital History
