Auckland: New Zealand’s controversial batsman Jesse Ryder, along with fast bowler Doug Bracewell, has been suspended by New Zealand Cricket for a late night drinking session before the ongoing opening Test against India here at Eden Park.

A report in The New Zealand Herald said: “Both have form for breaches of discipline and have received suspensions. NZ Cricket were forced to investigate yesterday even as captain Brendon McCullum was scoring a magnificent double century.

“Bracewell turned up on Thursday morning with a broken bone in a foot. He was the backup fast-bowling option should there have been a late injury to one of the three chosen for the Test. Ryder was on standby for leading batsman Ross Taylor, whose wife is due to give birth to a second child and may have been a late withdrawal.

“New Zealand Cricket are furious with the pair, especially as it comes at a time when the national team are dominating the Test against the Indians and the focus should be on on-field performance.”

“Their behaviour is totally unacceptable the night before a match. We trust the players to make good decisions and the pair has breached this trust,” team manager Mike Sandle was quoted as saying by the newspaper.

No comment by NZC
The cricketers admitted to the manager that they had been away drinking. New Zealand Cricket said it will make a comment only after the investigation is completed. It can be recalled that Bracewell and Ryder were suspended for a game after getting into a fight in a Napier bar during a series in February 2012.

Bracewell also missed three Tests against the touring England team last season after cutting his foot on glass while cleaning his Napier home after a party. And Ryder has come back on his cricketing track only recently after a serious skull injury caused by an attack outside a Christchurch bar last year left him in coma. Ryder has also had drug-related problems.
