Newborns' death case: Hospital doctor removed

Jaipur: A senior doctor of a government hospital in Ajmer, where five newborns died on Saturday and Sunday, has been removed for dereliction in duty, district officials said today.

Dr Mahendra Mangal, Associate Professor, Jawahar Lal Nehru Government Hospital, was removed and put under Awaiting Posting Order status yesterday. He was supposed to be present in the hospital on Saturday night but he was not there, Ajmer District Collector Gaurav Goyal said.

The newborns from different parts of Ajmer and Nagaur were admitted to the hospital. "They were suffering from critical problems and died on Saturday night and Sunday morning following which a committee of three members was constituted. The committee said in its report that the newborns died due to critical health problems," he said.

The Collector said arrangements of hygiene and sanitation were improved in the hospital after the matter came to light. He said it will also be ensured that senior doctors remain present in the hospital round the clock.
