As per the proposal passed by NMMC, the new building will be eight-storey high, of which two floors will be used as the fire station and the rest will be staff quarters. There will be 25 1BHK flats and six 2BHK flats. According to the proposal the building will also have seven elevators and ample parking space to accommodate around 200 vehicles. The cost of the project is estimated at Rs 6 crore.

Vijay Rane, Chief Fire Officer, said: “The current fire station at Vashi is older than its counterparts in Belapur, Airoli and Nerul. It was constructed in the 1980s and a makeover was long overdue. During the renovation we would be shifting our operations to a plot behind the current building.”

Talking about the project, Jaswant Mistry, executive engineer, NMMC added, “The date to commence the construction of the new building would be decided soon. We expect the new fire station to come up within a span of 24 months after starting the work.”
