The BMC is confident this unbelievable phenomenon will occur this year at Juhu and Hindmata too

There will no flooding at Hindmata in Dadar, Milan Subway in Vile Parle and Juhu.

Unbelievable, but that's exactly what the BMC is saying this year. "Hindmata and Milan Subway used to get flooded even if there was no high tide.

It had become a regular occurrence every monsoon. But, this year, we have worked on the storm water drains and are very positive that there won't be any flooding in these areas.

It is a miracle for us," said V L Joshi, chief engineer, storm water drains, BMC.

At Hindmata, the BMC found in its recent survey of the underground utilities in the area that around two decades ago, while laying the foundation for the flyover that exists today at Madkebua Chowk, their engineers broke open the storm water drains.

This has ensured that this area always floods during heavy rains, as the damaged arch drains designed to carry rainwater from Dadar to Britannia outfall and finally into the sea have been reduced to barely 1.13 sq m from their original 2.69 sq m carrying capacity.

So, this year, the BMC constructed a trapezoidal loop, which will carry accumulated rainwater to the outfall quickly, said civic officials.

"The water accumulation will be reduced to less than half even if there's high tide and above-normal rains of
75 mm," said a senior BMC official.

At Milan Subway

A problem was detected at Milan Subway too. The BMC found that there was a culvert on Western Express Highway, but it wasn't connected to any opening.

"All the water from the Azad Nagar service roads used to collect at Milan Subway. We are now connecting the culvert to the nearby sewer line.

Also, we will have a heavy duty pump placed at the saucer position of Milan Subway. The other pump will be at the LIC nullah," said Joshi. Work has already started and will be over in six days.

The situation will be better for Juhu residents too thanks to the Irla pumping station, which is being constructed at a cost Rs 77 crore.

On a high tide day during the monsoons, the pumping station will pump the accumulated water six km into the sea.

It will have eight sets of pumps with a total capacity of 48 cubic metres per second and will be operational by the end of June.

Costs incurred

Estimated cost for Hindmata storm water drain work: u00a0Rs 70 lakh
Estimated cost of Milan subway work: Rs 1.5 crore
