The Athletics Federation of India (AFI) that is under-fire from the sports ministry and faces de-recognition, yesterday earned support from the international parent association, the IAAF
The sports ministry has directed the AFI to hold a re-election for the posts of president, secretary and treasurer within 60 days or before February 28, whichever is earlier. It has also ordered the AFI to amend its constitution else face de-recognition.
Yesterday however, the IAAF threw its weight behind AFI. “The IAAF has no reason to doubt the results of the elections held by AFI earlier this year, so consequently also recognise the current office bearers. The IAAF will inform the Indian Ministry that this is our position,” IAAF’s Deputy Secretary General and Director of Communication, Nic Davies told PTI via email yesterday.
