Dr Malini, who puts big criminals through the lie detector test, is far from truthful when it comes to her own records, corruption watchdog tells Lokayukta

India's most famous narco cop fudged her school certificate to be eligible for her job, a corruption watchdog has told the Lokayukta.

Dr Malini S, assistant director of Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL), allegedly claimed to be younger so that she could circumvent the age bar. The FSL puts criminals through the lie-detector test.

Transparency International (TI), an organisation fighting corruption, lodged a complaint with the Lokayukta on February 9, saying Malini changed her date of birth on her SSLC marks card and cheated her way to the top.

And guess who has attested a copy of her marks card as true?

Dr B K Muralidhar, professor at UVCE. He happens to be her husband.

Doctoring details

"The age limit for the post of assistant director was 45 years," said B Vijayabhaskar Shetty, general secretary, TI. "It's obvious she doctored the marks card."

Malini was with the FSL since 1998 as a contract employee. She decided to opt for a regular role in 2007, and applied for the post on June 1, 2007. The only thing coming in the way was her age.

Records with MiD DAY show that the SSLC marks card submitted to the special recruitment committee shows her date of birth as 12.05.1964, the same as in her application.

But records in the Karnataka Secondary Education Board, which hands out the certificate, say her date of birth is 12.05.1960.

If 12.05.1964 is her real date of birth, it means Malini completed her SSLC in 1975, when she was only 11 years.
Defending his colleague, Dr Mohan, director, FSL, said, "We can't say she has forged the document as there is a provision to change it under certain circumstances."

Srikumar, the then DG&IGP, had recommended Malini's dismissal on Dec 24. It is pending with the home ministry over two years.

"There are procedures tou00a0 follow," said V S Acharya, home minister. "We have issued a show cause notice. We will act once we receive her explanation."

Court case

"We will not stop at the Lokayukta," said Shetty. "We will file a complaint with police, and move court if needed."

Acknowledging the complaint, Lokayukta Justice N Santhosh Hegde said, "We have referred it to our legal officers for scrutiny. We will start investigating after that."

Parties

Transparency International has made Dr Mohan, Dr B K Muralidhar, and Mudduveeraiah, chief administrative officer, office of the DG&IG, co-accused with Malini. The complaint says they have willingly aided and abetted the crime

Dr Malini says:

"They are victimising me because I am working hard at FSL. Yes, I have changed my date of birth with SSLC board's permission. I will prove I am right when the time comes."

Official speak

However, a board official said it was not possible to change the date of birth without court's intervention. Especially, changing date of birth by four years was out of question.u00a0u00a0u00a0

Criminals probed by Malini

Malini has grilled some of India's most notorious criminals, including
>>Abdul Kareem Telgi (Stamp paper scam)
>>Rajkumar (Alleged killer of Aarushi)
>>A priest and nun who allegedly killed Sister Abhaya

More cheating

Malini has also allegedly falsified her higher education qualification. She has produced documents saying she has done a course on Hypnosis and Internal Psychology from Calgary University, Canada.

In reality, she had only attended a conference jointly organised by the Indian Institute of Science and the university.

Documents submitted by her say she has done MA in psychology but she claims she has an MSc in industrial and clinical psychology.
