Man pleads with Consumer Forum to translate judgment copy

The recent hungama in the Vidhan Sabha over the Marathi-Hindi language tussle, propagated by MNS MLAs, is still fresh in the minds of the city's populace.

However, a businessman has introduced a fresh twist to the language saga by asking the State Consumer Forum to translate the copy of his judgment from English to Hindi.

The businessman Deepak Shah (55) claims that he doesn't understand Marathi or English, and therefore wants the copy translated to Hindi. Shah received the judgment on August 27, in an eight-year-old mediclaim case.

"I am a Gujarati businessman, and I don't know English or Marathi. I want it translated into Hindi, as that's the only language I understand," said Shah.

He wrote to the consumer forum to obtain his judgment in Hindi. However, the first appellate officer denied Shah's application as there is no provision under RTI to translate any information into Hindi.

The Other Side

"Shah is misusing his power under the RTI. He is a resident of Maharashtra and should understand the regional language very well.

We can not help him even if writes letters to any superior authority," said Sudhir Wagh, Maharashtra State consumer forum's Registrar.
