After hosting a series of sports competitions, Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) is set to hold a marathon for the first time on February 5. The Navi Mumbai Mayor Marathon, which will start at 7 am from Mahatma Fule hall in Sector 17, Vashi, will take the route to Palm Beach road to Moraz circle, and will take the same route back to the Fule hall. Unlike the Mumbai Marathon, the corporation will be the only organiser for the event, without any private sponsors.

Mayor Sagar Naik said, "We have decided to hold a marathon in Navi Mumbai this year as part of our initiative to endorse sports activities in the city. Although the marathon will not be as big a fanfare like the Mumbai Marathon, the event in the satellite city will facilitate people to come together, run and enjoy. As this is the first year, NMMC alone is the organiser, but we have taken care of everything so that the event becomes memorable."

The Navi Mumbai Marathon is categorised in six groups: men's, women's, boys', girls', senior citizens' and a separate race for physically challenged participants.

Men's group will have to cover a distance of 15 km, women's a run of 10 km. Boys and girls will have to cover distances of 4 km and 3 km respectively. Senior citizens will have to run a km.

"We have categorised the run into six groups so as many people as possible can participate. In total, over Rs 1.5 lakh will be given in prize money to winners in the different categories," said Naik.
