Kathak exponent Anjalie Gupta and her Nrityanjalie students have been invited, for the third time, to attend the World Folkdance Festival at Palma de Mallorca, Spain. The six-day festival, starting from April 14, sees a participation of over 80 to 90 countries.

Gupta says she has mixed the classical with the folk. "I have intertwined kathak with Rajwadi Ghoomar. The footwork of kathak is beautifully blended into folk and it's not jarring," she says.

On what keeps her going in a time when Western dance forms are a rage, she exclaims, "You should see the big hole in my pocket!" But students like Devangi Oza Kapadia, who has been learning with her since a toddler, and Padmini Somani, who plans to enroll her second daughter as well, give her the much required push to go on.

Archana Bagri and her two daughters Stuti and Ishita are going to Spain. "More than the competition, it's the chance my kids will get to interact and understand the folk dancers and their dances that's exciting," says Bagri.

Gupte says, "I have taught celebs but no one has done anything... and I don't mean monetarily. But I must add, Jet Airways Naresh Goyal's family (his daughter Namrata was Gupta's pupil before she shifted to London) gave us permission to carry 100 kilos excess baggage."
