"Earlier, patients suffering from diabetes and heart attacks at the age of 40 were rare, but currently people as young as 24 or 27 are having heart attacks, which is quite alarming. One of the main reasons behind these diseases is obesity," said Ramesh, who has been into Batriatric surgery since five years. Obesity is a medical condition, in which excess body fat accumulates to the extent to have adverse effects on health, leading to reduced life expectancy or increased health problems.

"Obese people are prone to a slew of diseases, which leads to depression, migraine and infertility, with decreased sperm count in men. In case of women, it causes menstrual irregularities and further to Polycystic Ovary Syndrome leading to infertility.

Most alarming of all, it leads to 3-5 types of cancers," added Ramesh, who was one among the first doctors to bring weight loss surgery as a solution for obese patients in India. Junk food and work pressure make it increasingly difficult for youngsters to cope. "The only solution is for people to prioritise on their health and maintain a healthy weight,"Ramesh added.

Stressing further on the growing importance of Batriatric surgery, Ramesh said, "It is a great solution for combating the growing problem of obesity. Keyhole surgery to reduce the size of the stomach to induce long term weight loss is performed and according to research, it also reduces many other medical problems like diabetes, blood pressure, arthritis, etc."

Weight loss surgery is often misinterpreted as cosmetic surgery. Ramesh informed that the surgery is minor and the difference will be seen in 6-9 months and patients can leave the hospital within three to four days after the procedure is completed and not face complications.
