Heavy thundershowers for 5 more days, says Met

IF the heavy thundershowers in the last couple of days caught you unawares, then be warnde that there may not be let-up over the next five days.

According to the Indian Meteorological Department, the city has witnessed the longest post-monsoon showers this year, and these will continue for the next five days.

Dr A B Muzumdar, deputy director, IMD, Pune, explained that the low-pressure belt over the Bay of Bengal has created this situation and that is the reason why the convective conditions (rain with thundershower) have stretched into the month of October.

There is also an increase in heat and relative humidity with rainfall.u00a0

"We can't say that it is a new trend, nor is it abnormal or unpredictable. Our routine post-monsoon predictions have never gone wrong since October 1 for every 48 hours," he said.

Describing the nature of the thundershowers, Muzumdar said the rainfall was sporadic in some pockets.

"Shivajinagar and the old city area is getting 300 per cent extra post-monsoon rainfall, whereas Lohegaon is receiving only 60 per cent more and the quantity of rain is more and differ area wise. This discrepancy is interesting and needs to be studied more," he said.

M S Dixit, a resident of Sadashiv Peth, said: "We have never seen this kind of rainfall for the past many decades. The flood-like situation on the city roads after the heavy rainfall in October looks strange and unbelievable."
