Designer Krsna Mehta tried to add a touch of modern India to your home with Indiacircus.(com), his latest venture, at a wallet-friendly price, finds Ayesha Nair
Designer Krsna Mehta stamps his signature style in his creations — be it in the floral prints of Zeba’s cushions or the pop art mugs of The Elephant Company.
With his latest venture, India Circus, the designer is branching out on his own. He says, “One evening I was chatting with a few friends who they pointed out that I was doing projects for others but nothing for myself. Initially I was averse to managing production which is why I did not start my own line but I figured that at the age of 32, it was a good time to start. This is me. This is how I want my work projected.”
Mehta partnered with Managing Director Devaki Khimji and Technology Director Hadi Curtay to launch India Circus. The name is a take on how the country is nothing short of a crazy circus. The brand’s philosophy is in keeping with the one Mehta has championed — India Modern. “It looks very contemporary and works in any setting,” he elaborates.
Under four collections — Neo-Nawab, Tamara, Kuheli and Jalebi — an array of home and personal accessories are available. You will find cushions with Mughal motifs and an ode to the era’s opulence, tissue boxes with Indian floral design elements from the Tamara range, a parrot motif doormat from the Kuheli collection that represents the vibrant birds of India, key chains and umbrellas with images of cycles, and Indian landmarks from the Jalebi range which is a fun look at all things that make a city. Mehta insists that one should not be afraid of colour and so his collections are bursting with vibrant hues.
Despite the range of designs and products, Mehta insists that India Circus is all about being affordable. He says, “It’s about affordable luxury, a model that has not been seen in India so far. We offer great quality at good prices. It’s a premium look at an affordable price.” One way he achieves a balance between price and quality is by creating a variety of products in similar designs.
At: India Circus is available at Westside stores and will soon be available online at indiacircus.com. Come December, Mehta will open the company’s flagship store
