Mumbai: Shobha, the oldest lioness from Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP) who was over eight years old, died Tuesday evening after suffering from prolonged illness.

Confirming the same an official said, "Yes it is true that Shobha died Tuesday evening but I cannot comment anything on the reason behind her death."

Sources confirmed that Shobha was ill from a long time. It should be noted that in September 2012, Shobha had given birth to three cubs of which two are alive and one had died over a year back due to illness.

The two lions, Ravindra and Shobha, were brought to SGNP in 2009 from Benerghatta National Park in Bangalore. The lions were brought to the park in exchange of a pair of white tiger Razia and Arya.

In the month of August 2013, Shobha’s mate Badshah lion had died of old age at 17. Badshah was also the father of Jespa and Gopal, the cubs born to Shobha in 2012.

In the month of April 2014 the authorities had released Shobha and Ravindra together so that they can mate but both used to fight a lot. Due to their fighting, the authorities were worried how the number of lions will increase inside the park. During these fights, Shobha had suffered severe injuries on her right flank and Ravindra also suffered an injury on his right eye.

It should be noted that in the second week of October 2013, Shobha and Ravindra had tried to mate but the attempt was unsuccessful. That time also both the animals had fought and suffered severe injuries. Because of which the animals were kept in two separate cages.

In the past few months there were attempts to release the animals together so that the differences between them are sorted out and successful mating takes place but every time there were more fights.

Apart from the injuries Shobha suffered during the fight, another reason for worry was that Shobha was also suffering from a gynaecological problem.

Do you know?

In the month of April 2010, Harishchandra Gembal was killed by lioness Shobha. The lioness attacked the victim while he was opening the manual inside gate of Lion Safari so that the bus can enter the buffer area but forgot to close it before opening the outer one. Soon the lioness entered from the open inner gate and attacked Gembal following which he died.
