Once bitten, twice shy! CBI opposes Abu Salem's request to travel to Delhi

CBI prosecutor Deepak Salvi yesterday opposed a plea filed by gangster and 1993 Mumbai blasts accused Abu Salem before the special TADA court for letting him travel to Delhi today to attend a hearing in one of the cases filed against him. It is for the first time that the CBI has objected to Salem’s plea for attending a hearing outside Maharashtra.

While Salvi claimed his opposition stemmed from past experiences, sources claimed pictures of the gangster and his girlfriend, making merry during his previous travels to Delhi and Lucknow, published in mid-day was the reason for the CBI objecting Salem’s plea. Salvi also contested that letting Salem have things his way portrayed the prosecution in bad light. Besides objecting to the plea, Salvi also concluded the final arguments in 1993 blast case against seven accused — Abu Salem, Mustafa Dossa, Firoz Khan, Tahir Merchant, Riyaz Siddiqui, Karimullah Shaikh and Abdul Qayoom.

He told court that the prosecution has proved all the charges against the accused and hence they should be convicted for waging a war against the country.
