Head to the newly-opened bake shop, Fairytale, for their yummy quiche, puffs, tarts, brownies and cakes

Once upon a time...

Starting your own little chocolate pastry and puff café is surely a fairytale beginning for a newly-married couple. When you have a childhood friend, who also happens to be a trained pastry chef thrown, the idea seems just perfect.

Fairytale has opened at Salunke Vihar Road and added to Wanowrie’s already overcrowded bakery scene. Yet its wooden flooring and simple baked items on offer definitely sets it apart from the other eateries located right opposite Fairytale.

Mushroom and Bell Pepper Quiche

They have pre-made savouries and desserts that they instantaneously heat-and-serve. We began with a delicious Mushroom and Bell Pepper Quiche ('50) that retained the bite of the mushrooms and the pungency of the peppers. The Mutton Quiche ('60) was just as good.

Confident, we marched on. Alas! The Spinach and Paneer Sandwich ('50) was a bit of a disaster. If only it was grilled and not served at room temperature perhaps the white bread sandwich would have been more palatable. Anyway, Fairytale made up for it with their simply yummy Paneer Puff ('25). The many-layered, flaky and crispy puff was served piping hot and oozing with a flavourful filling of cottage cheese.

Paneer Puff

It was time to shut the savoury shop and latch on to the dessert bandwagon. We began with a Coconut and Caramel Tart ('60) that lived up to the description with a crunchy base and a coconut topping that didn’t overpower our tastebuds. Our Baked Truffle Pastry ('50) was even better. The deliciously firm-yet-gooey pastry was melt-in-the-mouth good and revealed its lingering flavours after a few bites.

It was time to leave and we opted for a Wildberry and Philadelphia Cream Cheese ('80), in our doggie bag, which was just average. The Chocolate Walnut Brownie ('40) turned out to be mind-blowingly delicious and gooey. The heartily loaded Chocolate Walnut Pound Cake ('120) also lasted us for a few days.

We have seen quite a few little bakeries serving good quality products which have had to shut shop in Wanowrie in the recent past. We sincerely wish that this fairytale has a romantic happily-ever-after ending.
