Osama Bin Laden's killing 'top news story' of 2011: Poll

The killing of Al Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden during the US Navy Seals raid in Abbottabad, Pakistan was the top news story of 2011, followed by March 11 earthquake and tsunami in Japan, a new poll has shown.

The killing of Al Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden during the US Navy Seals raid in Abbottabad, Pakistan was the top news story of 2011, followed by March 11 earthquake and tsunami in Japan, a new poll has shown.

The Associated Press' poll of U.S. editors and news directors showed that Bin Laden's death received 128 votes out of 247 ballots cast for the top 10 stories, while Japan disaster received 60 first-place votes.

The Arab Spring uprisings that rocked North Africa and the Middle East was the third popular issue followed by the sovereign debt crisis in the United States, The News reports.


The Gulf of Mexico oil spill was the top story followed by US President Barack Obama's health care reforms and the U.S. mid-term elections in the 2010 poll.
