Intrepid Travel's page was also highly praised for having "mystery offers" and engaging customers to interact as a community.

The Facebook page was given the No. 1 spot in the Social Media Examiner's Top 10 Small Business Facebook Pages of 2011 competition.

The judges liked Intrepid Travel's use of a "photo of the day", their promotion of "mystery trips" and their "Meet Others" page, which encourages a community amongst their customers.

The company was set up 22 years ago by Melbourne businessmen Geoff Manchester and Darrell Wade, and the Facebook page was created on December 2009.

In the past month, the page has grown from 3000 "likes" to almost 80,000.

More than 90 per cent of the page's fans are active every month.

The Company's spokeswoman Eliza Anderson said Facebook suited Intrepid Travel's business because the customers came from all over the world.

"We're obviously passionate about travel but we never anticipated how engaged our fans would be," News.com.au quoted her as saying.

"It soon became obvious that Facebook is made for travel. People love sharing their stories and experiences with a group of likeminded people," she added.

Other winners of the global competition included a teen entertainment company in Arizona, a dog training company in Ireland and a parenting magazine in New Jersey.
