With a career spanning over sixty decades, the late Jehangir Sabavala was quite the perfectionist in his handling of light, texture and colour.

One of his works titled Vespers 1 has set a new world auction record by getting sold for £253,650 (Rs 2.1 crore) at a Bonhams sale in London. CS brings you some more information on one of India’s leading modernist painters:




>> He studied at Cathedral and John Connon School, Elphinstone College and has a diploma from Sir JJ School of Art. He’s also studied at Heatherley School of Fine Art, London and in Académie Andre Lhote, Paris, the Académie Julian and at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière.

>> His last solo exhibition, ‘Ricorso’, was held at the Sakshi Gallery, Mumbai, in 2008.

>> Arun Khopkar’s film Colours of Absence on Sabavala’s life, won the National award in 1994.

>> At the age of 89, the artist passed away after battling lung cancer for two years. u00a0
