Three Pakistani officials have been granted consular access to the injured prisoner

A Pakistani prisoner was critically injured when a fellow prisoner attacked him in the high security Kot Bhalwal jail yesterday, a day after Indian death row prisoner Sarabjit Singh died after being attacked in a Pakistani jail.

Sialkot resident Sanaullah Ranjay was attacked by former Indian Army soldier Vinod Kumar, convicted for murder, following an altercation, a police officer said.

He was taken to the Government Medical College Hospital in Jammu, where doctors said he had slipped into a coma, much like Sarabjit Singh who was attacked in a Lahore jail on April 26.

“He has suffered serious head injuries and is in a coma. He has been admitted to the ICU and we are planning surgery on him,” a doctor at the hospital said.

Sanaullah, who was critically injured was later flown to Chandigarh and admitted to the ICU of the Post-Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER).

Jail sources said Sanaullah had been in the Kot Bhalwal Jail for the last 17 years. He has been booked in eight cases, including murder, and been given life imprisonment in two.

Vinod Kumar belongs to Uttarakhand and has been in Kot Bhalwal for six years. He is undergoing life imprisonment for murdering his colleague in Leh.
According to sources, both were brought to the jail grounds Friday as was routine.

“They were all talking to each other when all of sudden some altercation took place between the two and Vinod Kumar hit Sanaullah on the head.”

Meanwhile, yesterday India granted permission to three Pakistani officials for consular access to injured Sanaullah.

‘Send him back’
A statement from the Pakistan High Commission in Delhi sought Sanaullah’s release “on humanitarian grounds” and said India should provide the assistance Pakistan will need in flying the injured man home in an air ambulance.

One dead after Tihar inmates clash in jail
New Delhi: A violent clash between inmates of the high-security Tihar Jail in the Capital yesterday left one dead and four injured, police said. A 27-year-old inmate died in the clash. The incident occurred around 6.30 am when the inmates were being shifted to other cells in Jail Number 1. “Javed, who was lodged in the prison for seven years, has died,” Tihar Jail officer Sunil Gupta said. The injured have been admitted to Deen Dayal Upadhayay Hospital in west Delhi, and a probe has been ordered and some inmates have been questioned, Gupta said. The clash occurred on a day when security in prisons across India, including in Tihar Jail, was beefed up for Pakistani inmates after the assault and death of Indian prisoner Sarabjit Singh in a Pakistani jail on Thursday, and the subsequent attack by an inmate on a Pakistani prisoner lodged in a Jammu jail yesterday.
