Delhi University wants all its students to be proficient in the Queen's language. Especially those who lose out on jobs because they can't talk English and walk English!

In a move to enhance career opportunities, Delhi University (DU) is offering a 100-hour course to help students polish up their lingua franca abilities, after many were shown the door by companies for this lacuna last session.

The initiative will also give a tough competition to private English coaching institutes in the Capital that charge hefty fees. The course, being offered by the Institute of Lifelong Learning (ILLL), DU, is being scheduled at different centres and colleges.

The course, lasting for four months, will start from mid-August and end in December this year. Classes will be held thrice a week and the two-hour class will be held only after the day's sessions are over.

Charting the course

The certificate course is offered at two levels basic and intermediate. The basic course is for those who have a preliminary knowledge of English language but can't put it into regular use.

While the intermediate course is for students who have obtained at least C-grade in the basic course offered by DU or are fairly confident of using the skills of listening, speaking, writing and reading for different purposes at a relatively higher level.

The course is open only to the students of DU enrolled in undergraduate, post-graduate or research programmes, including certificate courses and courses at the Campus of Open Learning.

"Private institutes charge an exorbitant price but the course we are offering is for Rs 2,500 only. Also, it's a certificate course provided by the university. We have received good response for the initiative and expect more in the future," added Bakshi.

Students' gain

Sunil Sharma, an undergraduate student at Saheed Bhagat Singh College, said, "I belong to a small town in Bihar and lack good command over English language. It's difficult for me to afford the fees of a private institute. This course will definitely be a boon for students like me."u00a0
